All Time Favorite Albums: Black Anima- Lacuna Coil

Released in October 2019, Lacuna Coil's ninth studio album is a haunting and beautifully melancholy experience. While I adore every single one of their albums, this is one of my absolute favorites by them, with every single song drawing you in with the dynamic vocals from Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro. This album particularly holds a special place in my heart, as the lyrics reflect the experiences and emotions I have lived through in my own life.

The first single came out in July of 2019, and I was immediately hooked. The vocals are beautifully done, but I was also drawn in by the bass in the sing as well. done by the amazing Marco Coti Zelati. A great introduction for what was to come, the tone for the album was set. "Reckless" followed in September, showing off a new side to the band, with Scabbia shining through on this song. The last single, "Save Me" came a week before the album was due out, and I have a special connection to this song.
As I mentioned in one of my previous blog posts, this song came out during a time in my life when I was experiencing troubling mental health at the time. Then when this song dropped, I remember hearing it and being extremely moved. The lyrics were so relatable and real, and I would constantly listen to it, and it brought me great comfort. This has definitely become a top song for me whenever I am having a rough time, and hearing Scabbia's monologue towards the end of the song is extremely empowering.

While every song is breathtaking, I want to go through a couple of my favorites. "The End Is All I Can See" is a really standout track for me, especially as someone who struggles with anxiety, which the song hits on. "Apocalypse" and "Veneficium" are two songs I constantly go back to as well,. Both are extremely emotional and hard hitting, showing the best from each band member. Finally, the bonus track "Through the Flames" is a wonderful, symphonic extravaganza, and reminds me of "Virtual Environment", another favorite of mine too. This song specifically reminds me of older Lacuna Coil material, and it was definitely a great surprise to hear listening to the album my first time.

The week before the album came out, I had the pleasure to go to my first concert ever, and it was a Lacuna Coil show. I had an amazing time, and hearing them live was a dream come true. This is also partly why this album is one of my all time favorites, as I remember hearing them play songs from it live as well.
The beauty and rawness of this album makes it great, and I still listen to it on repeat today. It was an album that help me get through some of the worst on 2020, and it is timeless for me. I honestly can't wait to see what comes next from the band after this album.
Note: I know it has been quite a while since I have posted on this blog, and I am looking forward to continuing to post here!
